In the scope of the RAPIDE project (Relevant Assessment and Pedagogies for Inclusive Digital Education) the workshop “Working with Peers in Education: Evaluation, Review and Assessment” was held as part of the Annual Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities Centre for Education and Learning’s Annual Event on December 14, 2021, and facilitated by Gillian Saunders-Smits, Vivian van der Werf and Gitte Verhagen from LDE Center for Education and Learning on Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Delft University of Technology in Netherlands.

The aim of the workshop was to allow lecturers to explore and share the possibilities of peer review, evaluation and assessment using online tools in their courses. In line with the COVID-19 regulations in the Netherlands at that time the workshop was held online within the Meeting Environment of Gather Town.

The main workshop takeaways identified by the participants were that when using any form of peer feedback, peer review or peer assessment is that

1) intrinsic motivation is very important;

2) students need to learn how to give feedback and value feedback for any form peer review, assessment or feedback to have an effect on the learning outcomes;

3) lecturers must make sure that the peer space is a safe space. If students have a bad experience, they are very reluctant to try it again;

4) visualization can also be a form of peer and can especially be useful to check for understanding; and finally

5) that looking at the possibilities of comparative judgement may also be very insightful.
